Lower Township Raiders Win Title

The Lower Township Raiders captured their first Cape May County Midget Football League title since the team's organization eight years ago, by defeating the 1965 league champion of Ocean City, 19 to 14. The Raiders came from behind after a slow start to take the honors with superior performances by backs Taylor and Wilkes. Last season, Lower lost five out of six games and only scored three touchdowns. Under the coaching guidance of Louis Elwell, the Raiders turned in an undefeated season this year with 5-0 record.

Rockets Take County Title On 26-19 Win

A Knights fumble late in the fourth quarter set the stage for a touchdown drive which gave The Regional Youth Club Rockets the Cape May County Midget Football league championship. The Rockets beat out a tough Middle Township team for the title in an exciting game which saw West Cape May footballers take the final game of the season, 26-19. The Rockets' Fred Washington recovered the Middle fumble and later on a sweep play went five yards for the winning TD. Jimmy Carpenter went over for the PAT with only two minutes left to play. The Rockets took an early 12 point lead in the game behind the bomb-throwing arm of quarterback Jim Riddle who threw two long ones; the first to Randy Scott which came two minutes into the game and the second to Charlie Wise after the Knights were unable to gain any yardage following the first Rocket TD. Middle Township came back strong in the second quarter with speedy Norman Edwards scooting left end for a 40-yard touchdown. The Rockets were unable to get anywhere when they took over and a high Rocket kick set up Middle for their second march to pay dirt, a five-yard scamper also by Edwards. Just before halftime, the Knights scored again. This time Steve Oliver went to the end zone on a 2-yard quarterback sneak. Edwards scored the PAT with Middle leading 19-12. The third Rockets touchdown came in the fourth quarter when Washington went 30-yards for the score. Riddle made the PAT to tie the game. The pig skin then changed hands twice. When the Knights gained possession again they fumbled with Washington scooping it up and on the next play scored the game winner.

Ocean City Hawks Win Midget Title

The Ocean City Hawks are champion of the Cape May County Midget Football League for the third time! The local gridders defeated Cape May, 28-6, to clinch the crown for the second straight year. It was the 22nd Hawk victory in their last 23 outings over three seasons. Fullback John Turner started the scoring for Ocean City when he capped off a long sustained drive with a three yard run in the second quarter. The rush for the extra point failed and the score was 6-0 at halftime. Early in the third quarter, quarterback Bobby Strange raced 35 yards for a score on what was a broken down pass play. When the young play caller couldn't find an open receiver he took off with the ball and scored behind a strong block by end Scott Vanderslice. Turner scored the two extra points to make the score 14-0. Just a few plays later Cape May retaliated on a 65-yard run to cut the Hawk lead to 14-6, but Al McCandles raced 15 yards late in the third frame for another Ocean City touchdown. In the fourth period, defensive ace Tony Galante intercepted a pass on the Cape May 41 and returned the ball to the 15. On the very next play Brian Clark took off around end for the touchdown. The extra points were unsuccessful but the Hawks had more than enough to clinch their third title.
